BAS celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Today, 11 February, is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a global initiative led by UNESCO and UN-Women. To celebrate, we have asked some of our female staff […]
I have been employed at BAS since 2003, with my career progressing from my original employment as Genomics Technician through MicroMolecular Lab Suite Manager (2008) to my current role as Senior Laboratory Manager (2013). Previous to this role I worked as a Forensic DNA Scientist. I have a B.Sc. in Marine & Environmental Biology (University of St Andrews), a M.Sc. in Science (Open University) and have recently completed a part-time PhD on Genetic Diversity of Antarctic Fish (University of St Andrews). I am a member of the Institute of Safety in Research and Technology, a member of the Institute for Science and Technology and a Registered Biosafety Practitioner.
My research interests focus on species identification and understanding of populations structures using genetic techniques, such as DNA barcoding and microsatellite analysis. Previous work has included a variety of Antarctic marine invertebrates and bird species. My main area of interest is Antarctic deep sea fish, particularly the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) and associated by-catch species, Grenadiers (Macrourus) and eel cods (Muraenolepis).
