This summer, British Antarctic Survey (BAS) will be an official partner for the Good Business Festival youth programme in the Liverpool City Region. BAS already has an important connection with the area – Britain’s new polar ship, RRS Sir David Attenborough – was built at Cammell Laird Shipyard in Birkenhead.

The Good Business Festival Youth Summit is an education initiative by the Good Business Festival – a three-day event across the Liverpool city region from 7-9th July 2021 focusing on ethical, inclusive and purpose-driven business.

The education programme will include a set of special workshops for young people across the city region from partners including UK Youth for Nature, Liverpool World Centre and BAS. The programme will also be transformed into a digital resource which will be made available to schools and community groups across Liverpool and beyond.

BAS have partnered with UK Youth for Nature to deliver a workshop on ocean science to secondary school students. The session will focus on some of the problems facing the ocean today, as well as some of the solutions and actions the students can take. The students will then have the opportunity to quiz an Early Career Researcher from BAS about current research in the polar oceans.

The Good Business Festival are working with Knowsley Council to deliver the special youth summit, taking inspiration from the COP26 climate change conference being held in Glasgow in November 2021. The summit – hosted by TV presenter and conservationist Chris Packham – will bring together hundreds of young people across the Liverpool City Region to take part in a schedule of talks and activities exploring how business impacts climate, the environment and habitats.

Professor Dame Jane Francis, Director of BAS said:

“We are delighted to be partnering with The Little Good Business Festival and UK Youth for Nature on this exciting programme of events. As we come together for our planet at COP26 in Glasgow later this year, there has never been a more important time to inspire the future custodians of our planet.”
