British Antarctic Survey has won the Gold Award at the Global FM Awards of Excellence 2024 for ‘The British Antarctic Survey Facilities and Estates team’.

Pete Smith (Interim Head of Polar Facilities) and Paul Dunn (Head of Facilities) said:

“It was an incredibly proud day when the Estates team won the IWFM Impact award for Public Sector Team of the Year 2023. We were then nominated by the IWFM in the Global FM awards taking place on World FM day. To be awarded the Gold Award is a wonderful achievement for both the UK and Polar teams.”

The judges at the Global FM Awards noted that the teams excel in providing excellent facilities management in some of the world’s most extreme environments to enable research into our polar regions for scientists from around the globe. They particularly praised efforts to reduce carbon emissions by installing more renewable energy systems in the UK and in Antarctica, including use of solar photovoltaic panels and actively researching using wind and air-source heat pumps.
