Join researchers from British Antarctic Survey who will contribute to a series of talks about the exciting world of Antarctic science at the Gilbert White & The Oates Collections, Gilbert White Field Studies Centre on 23 February, 30 March and 27 April 2017 starting at 6:30pm.

The series will begin on Thursday 23 February with a fascinating talk on Penguin Ecology and Biology by Dr Phil Trathan of British Antarctic Survey. Dr Trathan leads a group of marine predator scientists who research a wide variety of seabirds and marine mammals. His team led the fundamental science that made possible the development of a huge new and very important Marine Protected Area – the South Georgia MPA. In his talk Dr Trathan will explore how new technolology has helped reveal penguin behaviour previously unknown.

On Thursday 30 March Professor Klaus Dodds, Professor of Geopolitics at Royal Holloway College, University of London, will explain why the legacies of Scott and Shackleton matter today and help make sense of Britain’s relationship to Antarctica.

To finish the series on Thursday 27 April, Professor David Vaughan, Director of Science at British Antarctic Survey, will give an insight into the Hidden face of Antarctica. He will take you beneath Antarctica’s vast ice sheets, where there are mountain ranges the size of the Alps, lakes bigger than Windermere, rivers, streams and ancient volcanoes. Prof Vaughan will lead the audience on a journey through the secrets of this mysterious frozen world, and explains why what happens there matters to us all
