British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) Modernisation Project at Rothera Research Station has been shortlisted in four categories at the British Construction and Infrastructure Awards (BCIA) 2026.

The modernisation at Rothera Research Station is part of the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP), a UK government investment to enable world-class science in Antarctica for decades to come. It is transforming the way we operate with new facilities, technology and modern buildings – including the new beating heart of the station, the Discovery Building.

Antarctic science matters to the UK. The UK’s polar research does not operate in isolation and requires international collaboration on science and logistics

New national infrastructure in Antarctica, like the Discovery Building, enables us to support science and operations for years to come and is part of our overarching mission to advance knowledge, improve lives and drive UK growth.

The BCIA recognises achievement across the UK construction and infrastructure industry. The awards are run by New Civil Engineer and the Institution of Civil Engineers and judged by over 100 independent experts drawn from clients, government, and industry.
