Dave’s hometown is Dorking in Surrey. He commutes to Cambridge when he is in the UK.
Dave previously worked as an IT Manager for an RNIB college, catering for students with sight loss and learning difficulties. Before that Dave held various IT support jobs, was a teacher and a musician.
Dave knew very little of BAS until he saw an article on the BBC News Website which prompted him to go along to an open day in Cambridge. Intrigued by the variety of what BAS did, he monitored the recruitment website and was eventually delighted to secure a wintering role at Halley, the most southerly of the BAS bases. He expected it would be a challenge, an incredible experience and a great opportunity to gain new skills. So far he has not been disappointed.
The role of wintering IT & communications manager at Halley:
Dave is responsible for all IT and Communications at the base and ensures the smooth running of PCs and the network as well as having to make sure that there is always good radio contact with planes, ships, field parties and other bases.
Learning about radio and satellite communications has been great for Dave and he gains job satisfaction from helping others and seeing what they do.
Humbling experience:
Dave says
It’s like nowhere else I’ve been. The reality is a bizarre mix of normal day to day activities and pinch yourself moments where the scale and beauty of the place takes your breath away”. Dave takes all opportunities to get involved in other activities. “Where else can you learn to ski, play the guitar, cook, abseil, weld, learn a new language as well as have the chance to drive a bulldozer and become an emergency first aider!
The most exciting part is waking up each morning not really knowing what to expect of the day. For Dave every day throws out a new challenge or a new experience.
Can there be a down side?
Not seeing friends and family for months on end. Oh and lack of fresh fruit and veg!

If you’re thinking about it, go for it! With an open minded attitude and if you can get on with a wide range of people, BAS will train you in what you need to know and it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
