Conservation and leadership in Southern Ocean ecosystems
CONSEC explores how climate change and human activity are transforming the Southern Ocean, guiding global science and conservation.
I am a Higher Predator Ecologist, and the Science Manager for Signy Island Research Station in the South Orkney Island group. I’m currently working as part of the British Antarctic Survey’s Ecosystems science team with a particular research focus on managing the long term population monitoring of a number of seabird species breeding at Signy Island and also Goudier Island, Port Lockroy on the west Antarctic Peninsula. I’ve worked at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) since 2001 and during that time I’ve completed 13 deployments to the Antarctic, carrying out research and monitoring of penguins, other seabirds and also seals. In addition to my research, my current responsibilities cover science logistics and support, operations, administration, procurement, laboratory management, project planning and staff management. I am also responsible for all BAS imports/exports of scientific samples classified as animal pathogens and/or listed by CITES, working closely with DEFRA, APHA and the FCDO.
Long-term monitoring of seabird populations, with particular focus on the avifauna of Signy Island, South Orkney Islands. The development and introduction of innovative technologies to assist in seabird monitoring and data acquisition. Foraging distributions of sympatrically nesting pygoscelid penguins during breeding seasons and their relationship with food availability. Pre-moult and winter distributions of Adélie penguins as part of a co-ordinated international collaboration aimed at establishing the impact of climate change on Adélie penguin populations. Relationships between tourism and wildlife. Inter-specific competition between sympatrically nesting pygoscelid penguins and its effect on breeding success. Genetic variation between Pygoscelid penguin populations across the Scotia Arc.
