1. Characteristics of localized ionospheric disturbances inferred from VLF measurements at two closely spaced receivers

The very low frequency (VLF) NPM signal from Hawaii was recorded at two closely spaced (∼50 km) receivers (located at Palmer and Faraday stations) on the Antarctic Peninsula. Measurements of […]

2. Microbial dynamics in coastal waters of East Antarctica:bacterial production and nanoflagellate bacterivory

Bacterial production and heterotrophic nanoflagellate (HNAN) bacterivory were determined concurrently with measurements of abundance and biomass at weekly intervals between 30 December 1993 and 11 February 1994 at a shallow, […]

3. Microbial dynamics during the summer ice-loss phase in maritime Antarctic lakes

The dynamics of bacterioplankton and protozooplankton in two maritime Antarctic lakes (Heywood Lake and Sombre Lake, Signy Island, South Orkneys) were studied during the phase of ice break-out (December and […]

4. The surface energy and mass balance at Halley, Antarctica during winter

We present measurements of the components of the energy and mass balance of the snow surface at Halley Research Station, Antarctica. During the winter months, when insolation is small or […]

5. Longwave atmospheric radiation over Antarctica

The seasonal and spatial variation of downward longwave radiation (L↓) at the surface of the Antarctic ice sheet is studied using data from four stations. L↓ is found to depend […]

6. An Antarctic molluscan biomineralisation tool-kit

The Antarctic clam Laternula elliptica lives almost permanently below 0 °C and therefore is a valuable and tractable model to study the mechanisms of biomineralisation in cold water. The present study […]

7. Demonstration of “substantial research activity” to acquire consultative status under the Antarctic Treaty

Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties are entitled to participate in consensus-based governance of the continent through the annual Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings. To acquire consultative status, an interested Party must demonstrate […]

10. Weddell Sea tectonics and Gondwana break-up: an introduction

The Weddell Sea, part of the circumpolar Southern Ocean, is probably the most remote, least known and least accessible sea in the world. Difficult ice conditions have limited the acquisition […]

11. New seismic data from the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica

We present the first images of sub-seabed structure to be obtained from beneath the Ronne Ice Shelf. Single-fold profiles totalling 158 km were recorded using a new form drag cable […]

12. A towed geophone system for use in snow-covered terrain

A new type of drag cable has been developed, which was successfully used to collect seismic reflection data on an Antarctic ice shelf. Standard geophone elements were encapsulated in polyurethane […]
