Simulating how space weather events threaten satellites
In the SORBS project we are studying how changes in the outer boundary of the geomagnetic field lead to rapid changes in the radiation belts closer to Earth.
I am a PhD student working in both the Space Weather and Atmosphere team at BAS, and the Astrophysics group in the Department of Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on modelling electron acceleration and loss in Earth’s radiation belts using the BAS Radiation Belt Model. In particular I have worked on improving the modelling of losses of electrons to the magnetopause by modelling the location of the of the outer edge of the radiation belts using magnetic field models. I am currently working on reproducing rapid atmospheric electron losses during storm events within the BAS RBM.
