I am a BAS Emeritus Fellow with an extensive publication record on the biology, ecology and management of marine ecosystems in the Southern Ocean. I have wide experience and an established track record of interdisciplinary research, commissioned research and international collaboration. I have published over 275 peer-reviewed publications and have an H-index of 54.
Previously at BAS, I provided advice to the management organization responsible for Southern Ocean fisheries, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. I advised CCAMLR on the designation of the South Orkney Islands southern shelf Marine Protected Area, the first MPA anywhere in the world in areas outside of national jurisdiction. I also advised CCAMLR in its work to designate Scientific Special Areas, areas where ice-shelves retreat or collapse.
Previously, I provided scientific advice to the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, leading to the designation of the SGSSI sustainably managed Marine Protected Area, one of the largest sustainably managed MPAs anywhere in the world ocean. I also advised the Association of Responsible Krill Harvesting companies on the designation of Voluntary Buffer Zones that minimize competition between the fishery for Antarctic krill, and krill-eating penguins.
I have participated in 20 Antarctic field trips, having been involved in predator tracking studies for over 20 years. I am particularly interested in how seabirds utilize their available habitat and how this relates to their reproductive output and performance.
I have strong links with BirdLife International and WWF (UK) and I am a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Penguin Specialist Group. I was the founding Chair of the Science Advisory Group, Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund, a novel collaboration between the fishing industry, NGOs and scientist.

NERC/BAS Emeritus Fellow: 2022 – :
NERC/BAS Band 3, Head of Conservation Biology: 2004 – 2022:
I was part of a diverse group of marine predator scientists who undertook ecological research into the ecology of a wide variety of seabirds and marine mammals in the Southern Ocean. Key components of this research focused upon foodweb interactions (e.g. foraging ecology, energetic requirements), critical constraints on life histories (e.g. environmental impacts, breeding performance), circumpolar connections (e.g. post-breeding dispersal) and anthropogenic impacts (e.g. climate change, and resource competition with fisheries). The Conservation Biology group also managed NERC/BAS long-term monitoring of key marine predators in the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic.
The group provided national capability and advocacy for science into Antarctic policy arenas, e.g. for the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the Agreement for the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP). I was personally involved with CCAMLR for over 30 years and have helped provide strong scientific leadership.

This project aims to improve our understanding of how Antarctic krill, foraging whales and the krill fishery interact.
The winter krill project monitors Antarctic krill and predator overlap around South Georgia. Research informs conservation and ecosystem management.
The study aimed to map penguin foraging ranges during the breeding season to assess whether existing 50 km coastal fishing exclusion zones adequately protect these krill-dependent seabirds from potential competition with the Antarctic krill fishery.
The aim of this project is to learn more about the feeding habits of penguins around the Antarctic Peninsula to understand how their behaviour may be changing as the waters around the Peninsula warm.
The Larsen-C Benthos project studied benthic biodiversity on the seabed exposed by the 2017 calving of the Larsen-C Ice Shelf.
Higher Predators carries out long-term science to measure changes in Antarctic ecosystems. The aim is to understand the processes that drive these changes.
This project ensures the protection and conservation of the region’s rich and diverse marine life, whilst allowing sustainable fisheries.
Many populations of wildlife are remote, inaccessible or difficult to monitor. The advent of sub-metre, Very-High-Resolution (VHR) satellite imagery has enabled us study these animals in a much more efficient way.
The aim of this project is to understand the biological and physical factors that produce the very large swarms of krill, or “krill hotspots” that are found in the South Orkneys region.
Development of regional models to examine the detailed oceanography of island shelves and surrounding regions.
