Operations Manager
Mike is an operations planner for BAS science support activities. Over a period of 29 years, he has previously been Base Commander at three BAS stations, Field Operations Manager, as well as leading an environmental clean-up operation on Deception Island. He first came to BAS as a base assistant, then field assistant, driven by a passion for the outdoors and a thirst to see Antarctica
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Interests : Planning skills across a range of logistics types including marine, air and research station resource planning.
Provides BAS forward look on all Antarctic and increasingly Arctic field activities, having developed two 5 year field plans and ongoing support requirements to the current field work portfolio.
Instigated and managed a number of large research projects including; inception to complete delivery cycle, often in large multi national projects, eg sub Glacial Lake Ellsworth, AGAP, FISS.
Lead on logistics planning between BAS and international partners, and Royal Navy support in Antarctica.
Strategy development for science support delivery and efficent use of science support systems.
Oversees BAS field safety policy.
