Surgeon Commander Jonathon ‘J’ Lowe is a Royal Navy Consultant in Emergency Medicine and the Head of Research for the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit (BASMU).

Having previously spent time working in the Falkland Islands and at the Rothera Research Station, he joined BASMU as Registrar in Emergency Medicine before becoming one of the Senior Physician team.

He has spent an extended period operating in both the Arctic and Antarctic circle, delivering healthcare in remote and austere conditions.

He has a broad academic portfolio, focussed on environmental exposure, particularly the impact on both human and equipment performance at sub-zero temperatures. A significant area of interest is the prevention and management of cold weather injuries including both non-freezing cold injury (NFCI or trench foot) and freezing cold injury (FCI or frostbite).

As Head of Research for BASMU, he continues to work with deployed clinicians to enable the delivery of optimal remote healthcare as well as understanding the impact of remote operations on individual health.
