ANTARCTIC BLOG: Exploring an island abundant with wildlife
Bird Island has undergone several changes since the last diary entry in November. The summer breeding season is in full swing, and in some cases is starting to quieten down […]
I am the Zoological Field Assistant on Bird Island, South Georgia responsible for the Long-Term Monitoring of seals. During the summer I am busy working with Antarctic fur seals, primarily studying demographics and diet composition. In the winter, I utilise photo-identification methods to look at individual return rates and behaviours of leopard seals whilst also recording biometrics and diet composition. Prior to working with BAS, I have researched northern elephant seals and other pinnipeds on the Farallon islands in California, and participated in several cetacean research projects around the UK and Ireland.
