After more than 30 years at BAS (eventually as a Science Leader) I moved to the University of Cambridge in 2013, but retain my connection to BAS as an Honorary Fellow.
I chaired the science committee of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica, and for many years co-chaired International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS). I am a Fellow of the Royal Society.

My main area of interest is palaeoclimate from ice cores.

WACSWAIN (WArm Climate Stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet in the last INterglacial) is an ERC Advanced Grant to me, being carried out jointly by University of Cambridge and BAS. It aims, through ice cores drilled on ice rises adjacent to the main ice sheet, to detremine whether the West Antarctic Ice Sheet retreated during the last interglacial, when Antarctica was warmer than present.
BE-OI (Beyond EPICA – Oldest Ice) is a project to obtain a climate and greenhouse gas record from Antarctica extending up to 1.5 million years. This exceeds the current oldest ice core record of 800,000 years obtained in the EPICA project. the reconnaissance stage of BE-OI was funded by the EU and it is expected that the drilling will also be funded by the EU.
