Having been a Marine Engineering Officer with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, he gained a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Leicester University. He Joined BAS in 1988 as a Meteorologist and wintered at Halley IV for two and a half years. He was involved in numerous trips south, including the subglacial Lake Ellsworth exploration, supporting scientific equipment both in the field and on the ships.
