Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers
British Antarctic Survey (BAS) maintains a network of GNSS receivers across West Antarctica, originally established under the UKANET program.
This initiative was designed to study Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) however is now being repurposed for space weather research.
GNSS data supports ionospheric research, through analysis of Total Electron Content (TEC) variations, which provide insights into ionospheric dynamics.
Currently, 28 GNSS sites are deployed, though several are scheduled for decommissioning, leaving a streamlined network of 15 strategically distributed stations. Each site is equipped with a GPS receiver, solar panels, and battery systems. Data from these stations is transmitted via satellite link and monitored by the EarthScope Consortium.
