Examining Holocene stability of Antarctic Peninsula ice shelves
Read more of: Examining Holocene stability of Antarctic Peninsula ice shelvesTemperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula are increasing at a rate of 3.4°C per century, more than five times the global mean. At the same time, the region’s ice shelves have […]

Oil pollution in the Antarctic terrestrial environment
Read more of: Oil pollution in the Antarctic terrestrial environmentFuel oil has been extensively relied upon as an energy source since the earliest discovery and exploration of Antarctica. During this time oil spills have occurred, particularly around established research […]

Planetary wave trends in the lower thermosphere – evidence for 22-year solar modulation of the quasi 5-day wave
Read more of: Planetary wave trends in the lower thermosphere – evidence for 22-year solar modulation of the quasi 5-day waveGeomagnetic data from five northern hemisphere observatories at latitudes ranging from 22 degrees N to 67 degrees N have been used to investigate long-term trends in planetary wave activity in […]

A microwave radiometer for the remote sensing of nitric oxide and ozone in the middle atmosphere
Read more of: A microwave radiometer for the remote sensing of nitric oxide and ozone in the middle atmosphereNitric oxide, which reacts catalytically to destroy ozone, can be produced in great abundance in the middle atmosphere during energetic particle precipitation triggered by solar storms. During the Antarctic winter, […]

Diet variability and reproductive performance of macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus at Bird Island, South Georgia
Read more of: Diet variability and reproductive performance of macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus at Bird Island, South GeorgiaWe analysed summer diet and fledging mass of macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus breeding at Bird Island, South Georgia, during the crèche period (January and February) between 1989 and 2010. Crustaceans […]

Advances in the in-field detection of microorganisms in ice
Read more of: Advances in the in-field detection of microorganisms in iceThe historic view of ice-bound ecosystems has been one of a predominantly lifeless environment, where microorganisms certainly exist but are assumed to be either completely inactive or in a state […]

Challenges to the future conservation of the Antarctic
Read more of: Challenges to the future conservation of the AntarcticThe Antarctic Treaty System, acknowledged as a successful model of cooperative regulation of one of the globe’s largest commons ( 1), is under substantial pressure. Concerns have been raised about […]

The 600 yr eruptive history of Villarrica Volcano (Chile) revealed by annually laminated lake sediments
Read more of: The 600 yr eruptive history of Villarrica Volcano (Chile) revealed by annually laminated lake sedimentsLake sediments contain valuable information about past volcanic and seismic events that have affected the lake catchment, and they provide unique records of the recurrence interval and magnitude of such […]

Halogen activation via interactions with environmental ice and snow in the polar lower troposphere and other regions
Read more of: Halogen activation via interactions with environmental ice and snow in the polar lower troposphere and other regionsThe role of ice in the formation of chemically active halogens in the environment requires a full understanding because of its role in atmospheric chemistry, including controlling the regional atmospheric […]
