Mate switching and copulation behaviour in king penguins
Read more of: Mate switching and copulation behaviour in king penguinsExtra-pair paternity (EPP) in monogamous birds may result from either extra-pair copulations (EPCs) or mate switching. In this study of King Penguins in South Georgia, we observed no EPCs at […]

Late Quaternary iceberg rafting along the Antarctic Peninsula continental rise and in the Weddell and Scotia Seas
Read more of: Late Quaternary iceberg rafting along the Antarctic Peninsula continental rise and in the Weddell and Scotia SeasSediment cores from the continentalrise west of the AntarcticPeninsula and the northern Weddell and ScotiaSeas were investigated for their ice-rafted debris (IRD) content by lithofacies logging and counting of particles […]

Early life history strategies of notothenioids at South Georgia
Read more of: Early life history strategies of notothenioids at South GeorgiaAntarctic notothenioid early life history strategies are examined in general and then for common species at South Georgia. Channichthyids, bathydraconids, artedidraconids and some nototheniids have large eggs 3·0–4·9 mm whereas […]

Quantitative models for reconstructing catchment ice-extent using physical-chemical characteristics of lake sediments
Read more of: Quantitative models for reconstructing catchment ice-extent using physical-chemical characteristics of lake sedimentsThe physical characteristics of surface sediments from a suite of pristine lakes on Signy Island, maritime Antarctic, were used to develop a quantitative link between catchment ice-extent and lake-sediment response. […]

Oceanographic conditions south of Berkner Island, beneath Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica
Read more of: Oceanographic conditions south of Berkner Island, beneath Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, AntarcticaWe have made oceanographic measurements at two sites beneath the southern Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf. Hot-water drilled access holes were made during January 1999, allowing conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiling and the deployment […]

Geomagnetic and Solar Variability and Natural Climate Change
Read more of: Geomagnetic and Solar Variability and Natural Climate ChangeThe Earth’s magnetic field varies over many time scales. Whilst the slow secular variation of the strength and direction of the field over years to centuries is governed by processes […]

Orbitally induced oscillations in the East Antarctic ice sheet at the Oligocene/Miocene boundary
Read more of: Orbitally induced oscillations in the East Antarctic ice sheet at the Oligocene/Miocene boundaryBetween 34 and 15 million years (Myr) ago, when planetary temperatures were 3–4 °C warmer than at present and atmospheric CO2 concentrations were twice as high as today1, the Antarctic […]

Modelling Southern Ocean krill population dynamics: biological processes generating fluctuations in the South Georgia ecosystem
Read more of: Modelling Southern Ocean krill population dynamics: biological processes generating fluctuations in the South Georgia ecosystemVariability is a key feature of the pelagic ecosystems of the Southern Ocean and an important aspect of the variation is fluctuation in the abundance of krill Euphausia superba Dana, […]

CO2 fluxes among different vegetation types during the growing season in Marguerite Bay (Antarctic Peninsula)
Read more of: CO2 fluxes among different vegetation types during the growing season in Marguerite Bay (Antarctic Peninsula)The Antarctic Peninsula has experienced a strong climate warming trend of + 0.53 °C (mean annual air temperature) over the last 50 years. In the Polar Regions, changes in vegetation […]
