Decadal Predictability of the North Atlantic Eddy-Driven Jet in Winter
Read more of: Decadal Predictability of the North Atlantic Eddy-Driven Jet in WinterThis paper expands on work showing that the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is predictable on decadal timescales to quantify the skill in capturing the North Atlantic eddy-driven jet’s location […]

Overcoming the coupled climate and biodiversity crises and their societal impacts
Read more of: Overcoming the coupled climate and biodiversity crises and their societal impactsEarth’s biodiversity and human societies face pollution, overconsumption of natural resources, urbanization, demographic shifts, social and economic inequalities, and habitat loss, many of which are exacerbated by climate change. Here, […]

Late Cenozoic evolution of the latitudinal diversity gradient
Read more of: Late Cenozoic evolution of the latitudinal diversity gradientThe Late Cenozoic flourishing of polar marine ecosystems, just when temperatures were reaching their lowest levels, has always seemed anomalous. Such an observation is coupled with an increasing volume of […]

Investigating aerial diversity of non-fungal eukaryotes across a 40º latitudinal transect using DNA metabarcoding
Read more of: Investigating aerial diversity of non-fungal eukaryotes across a 40º latitudinal transect using DNA metabarcodingThe high number of bipolar and widespread bryophyte and microbial taxa in the Antarctic flora suggests the effective Long-Distance Dispersal (LDD) of spores and other propagules from lower latitudes and […]

Projected Changes to Wintertime Air‐Sea Turbulent Heat Fluxes Over the Subpolar North Atlantic Ocean
Read more of: Projected Changes to Wintertime Air‐Sea Turbulent Heat Fluxes Over the Subpolar North Atlantic OceanIn wintertime over the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean (SPNA), the strongest surface sensible and latent heat fluxes typically occur just downstream of the sea-ice edge. The recent retreat in Arctic […]

Visual predation risk and spatial distributions of large Arctic copepods along gradients of sea ice and bottom depth
Read more of: Visual predation risk and spatial distributions of large Arctic copepods along gradients of sea ice and bottom depthChanges in the community size structure of Arctic copepods toward smaller and less fat individuals or species have been linked to environmental changes. The underpinning mechanisms are, however, poorly understood. […]

The need for increased protection of Antarctica’s inland waters
Read more of: The need for increased protection of Antarctica’s inland watersProtection of Antarctica’s biodiversity and ecosystem values is enshrined in the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, which provides for the designation of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs) […]

Optimization of Single-step Pravastatin Production by Penicillium brefeldianum ESF21P through Response Surface Methodology
Read more of: Optimization of Single-step Pravastatin Production by Penicillium brefeldianum ESF21P through Response Surface MethodologyThe aim of the present study was to optimize the fermentation process for enhanced production of pravastatin by a wild-type Penicillium brefeldianum ESF21P strain using statistical approaches. Initial screening of […]

First evidence of industrial fly-ash in an Antarctic ice core
Read more of: First evidence of industrial fly-ash in an Antarctic ice coreSpheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) are a component of fly-ash, the particulate by-product of industrial high temperature combustion of fuel-oil and coal-series fuels. We provide the first evidence that these indelible […]

Categorisation of the length of bowhead whales from British Arctic whaling records
Read more of: Categorisation of the length of bowhead whales from British Arctic whaling recordsBritish whalers were the first and last from Europe to hunt bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) commercially from the Arctic whaling grounds of the Greenland Sea (East Greenland-Svalbard-Barents stock) and Davis […]
