On the non-Gaussian nature of ionospheric vorticity
We present, for the first time, the probability density function (PDF) of ionospheric vorticity measurements made by the SuperDARN HF radars. We show that the PDF is typically heavy-tailed and […]

Interannual variability of the S=1 and S=2 components of the semidiurnal tide in the Antarctic MLT
Read more of: Interannual variability of the S=1 and S=2 components of the semidiurnal tide in the Antarctic MLTTwelve years of horizontal wind data from the Scott Base MF radar and the Halley SuperDARN radar recorded between January 1996 and December 2007 are analysed to study the interannual […]

Mitochondrial plasticity in brachiopod (Liothyrella spp.) smooth adductor muscle as a result of season and latitude
Read more of: Mitochondrial plasticity in brachiopod (Liothyrella spp.) smooth adductor muscle as a result of season and latitudeHabitat temperature and mitochondrial volume density (Vv(mt,mf)) are negatively correlated in fishes, while seasonal acclimatization may increase Vv(mt,mf) or the surface density of the mitochondrial cristae (Sv(im,mt)). The effect of […]

Thermal plasticity of mitochondria:a latitudinal comparison between Southern Ocean molluscs
Read more of: Thermal plasticity of mitochondria:a latitudinal comparison between Southern Ocean molluscsMitochondrial volume density (Vv((mt,f))), cristae surface density (Sv((im,mt))), cristae surface area (Sv((im,f))) and citrate synthase (CS) activity were analysed as indicators of thermal acclimation in foot muscle of the limpet, […]

Ice and ocean processes in the Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctica
Read more of: Ice and ocean processes in the Bellingshausen Sea, AntarcticaIn the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula observations show diminishing sea ice and a rapid warming of atmosphere and ocean. These changes have led to the collapse of ice shelves […]

Observations beneath Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica and implications for its retreat
Read more of: Observations beneath Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica and implications for its retreatThinning ice in West Antarctica, resulting from acceleration in the flow of outlet glaciers, is at present contributing about 10% of the observed rise in global sea level. Pine Island […]

Depositional environments and chronology of Late Weichselian glaciation and deglaciation in the central North Sea
Read more of: Depositional environments and chronology of Late Weichselian glaciation and deglaciation in the central North SeaGeological constraints on ice-sheet deglaciation are essential for improving the modelling of ice masses and understanding their potential for future change. Here we present a detailed interpretation of depositional environments […]

Increased rate of acceleration on Pine Island Glacier strongly coupled to changes in gravitational driving stress
Read more of: Increased rate of acceleration on Pine Island Glacier strongly coupled to changes in gravitational driving stressPine Island Glacier, Antarctica, has been undergoing several related changes for at least two decades; these include acceleration, thinning and grounding line retreat. During the first major ground-based study between […]

Crevasses triggered on Pine Island Glacier by drilling through an exceptional melt layer
Read more of: Crevasses triggered on Pine Island Glacier by drilling through an exceptional melt layerThe basic theory of crevasse formation suggests that crevasses initiate at or near the surface. However, due to variations in stress with depth, it has been suggested that it is […]

Scaling of basal metabolic rate with body mass and temperature in mammals
Read more of: Scaling of basal metabolic rate with body mass and temperature in mammals1. We present a statistical analysis of the scaling of resting (basal) metabolic rate, BMR, with body mass, Bm and body temperature, Tb, in mammals. 2. Whilst the majority of […]

Aerogravity evidence for major crustal thinning under the Pine Island Glacier region (West Antarctica)
Read more of: Aerogravity evidence for major crustal thinning under the Pine Island Glacier region (West Antarctica)The West Antarctic Rift System provides critical geological boundary conditions for the overlying West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Previous geophysical surveys have traced the West Antarctic Rift System and addressed the […]

Regulation of wing or foot strokes in deep diving seabirds: a comparison between South Georgian Shag, Common Murre and Macaroni Penguin
Read more of: Regulation of wing or foot strokes in deep diving seabirds: a comparison between South Georgian Shag, Common Murre and Macaroni PenguinIn the wild, seabirds dive longer than their theoretical aerobic dive limit (oxygen store divided by oxygen consumption rate). One of the potential explanations for this is that when descending […]
