Antarctic observations available for IMS correlative analyses
The wide-ranging observational programmes of twenty-five stations operating on and around the continent of Antarctica during the IMS are reviewed. Some special features of Antarctic observations made within the polar cap, in the cusp region, in the auroral zone, near the plasmapause or at mid-latitudes are pointed out. Examples are presented of the use of British Antarctic Survey data in four research fields:
i) dayside positive bays and Pc5 pulsations occurring during auroral substorms,
ii) magnetically conjugate Pi2 pulsations,
iii) whistler studies of the longitudinal shape of the plasmapause, and
iv) movements of the ionospheric F2-region trough.
The purpose of this IMS Assessment Symposium has been explained by Cole [198O]. “With the maturation of the field of magnetospheric physics, it is now clearly appreciated that all techniques, whether satellite- or ground-based or rocket- or balloon-borne, have their significant role to play in the total understanding of magnetospheric Phenomena ? The data analysis phase of the IMS is obviously a most important, if not crucial, phase of the study”.
