My research is primarily focussed on how the information stored in age registering structures, such as shells and ear bones (otoliths), can be used to inform management of marine fisheries. Over the last 5 years I have worked on projects that utilized sclerochronology (the study of periodic growth rings in calcified structures) aiming to improve our understanding of several biological and ecological aspects of commercially important species. My PhD research focussed on the development of reliable ageing techniques for the common whelk, which supports important fisheries within the UK. This was achieved with a wide range of experimental and geochemical analyses to validate annual rings in statoliths (analogous to otoliths).
I began working with BAS as a post-doc investigating benthic community structure and Antarctic gastropods on the ICEBERGS project. I then started my current post as the fisheries ecologist, where I work on several aspects of the fisheries around the island of South Georgia. One of my main responsibilities is the Patagonian Toothfish ageing program at BAS, where I work closely with the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Isles (GSGSSI), and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) to provide information for the long-term ecosystem based management of this species.
Since 2018, I have been a member of the UK delegation to CCAMLR, and have participated in the working group on stock assessment and management (WG-SAM) and the working group in fish stock assessment (WG-FSA).
