Description

The role will involve working at the Rothera Research Station and you will be responsible for managing the tower operations and procedures. You will be a focal point for the Tower operations team and will be responsible for recruitment and training. We are looking for someone to take an innovative approach to this role and to continually look of for ways to improve current work processes.

This role requires a self-motivated, flexible, organized, innovative and enthusiastic individual with the ability to work off their own initiative. You will need to have a background in aviation or flight operations and have experience working in a high pressure and safety-critical environment.

COVID-19 update

  • We have a responsibility to do everything that we can to ensure that BAS Ships and Stations remain COVID free and that staff are deployed safely and responsibly. Our medical screening for this season will therefore take account of the recognised factors that increase your risk of an adverse reaction to the coronavirus (Primarily this is BMI at or above 30, age over 60 years old, or a history of smoking). The assessment is done confidentially by our Medical Unit and the criteria might be subject to change.
  • You might be required to quarantine two weeks prior to your deployment, and you might sail to Antarctica on our polar ship.

Purpose

To assist with the management, organisation and coordination of Rothera tower operations, acting as a focal point for the Tower operations team. The post holder will work closely with operational managers and external organisations to manage processes, people and training to ensure the Tower operations team provides safe and effective support to field and station operations.

Qualification

GCSEs in Math and English or equivalent

Duties

  • Manage tower operations including; procedures, standards, guidance & supporting documents to provide safe, timely and effective support to operations.
  • Take an active part in day to day tower operations.
  • Recruitment, line management, & training of Communications operators.
  • Provision of ongoing training and currency checking of Communications officers throughout the season.
  • Liaison with operational managers & other departments to ensure the tower provides effective support to operations, including planning and work out of season.
  • Take an innovative approach to drive solutions and improve ways of working.
  • Ensure communications equipment and aviation navigational aids are functional and available when required.
  • Assist in the safe execution of UAV flying operations.
  • Maintain an active interest in aviation and associated technical fields in order to ensure that future requirements are adequately considered in operational planning.
  • Act as a supportive member of the operations team, undertaking other tasks as may be required by the Head of Polar Operations to deliver operational output.
