Description

The British Antarctic Survey is inviting applications for an experienced observational physical oceanographer with an excellent academic profile including a strong mathematical background and a track record of interpreting and analysing observational polar oceanographic datasets. Direct experience with mooring data and analysis of similar Southern Ocean or Weddell Sea in situ and satellite observations would be considered a significant advantage. This is a 36 month position for a suitably qualified postdoctoral researcher and will contribute to two projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC): SO-CHIC (Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate) and ORCHESTRA (Ocean regulation of climate by Heat and Carbon sequestration and Transports).

These projects both require the assembly, analysis and synthesis of observational datasets from a variety of platforms and national programmes. The postholder will need to demonstrate that they have training/experience in working with observational datasets from various sources and using them to examine regional ocean dynamics. They will work with in situ and satellite observations from a variety of platforms operated by project partners, including moorings, gliders, drifters, ship and seal hydrography and satellite altimetry. These will be combined to provide a synthesis view of Weddell Gyre variability and change in response to external forcing. The combined datasets will be used to develop and test a gyre scale dynamical framework as well as to validate and tune models developed by partners within SO-CHIC. The dynamical framework will also need to integrate the impact of the Weddell polynya upon gyre circulation, and the candidate will need to work alongside SOCHIC and ORCHESTRA collaborators explicitly modelling the region.

The postholder will need a strong understanding of ocean dynamics, and specifically those relating to subpolar gyre circulation and Antarctic dense water formation and export. Additionally they will need a strong mathematical background and a track-record of delivering high-quality scientific results and disseminating them in leading journals, and at national and international conferences.

Purpose

The post is attached to the SO-CHIC (Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate) and ORCHESTRA (Ocean regulation of climate by Heat and Carbon sequestration and Transports) projects, both of which require synthesis of existing and new observations to describe the gyre scale dynamics and heat uptake of the Weddell Gyre.The postholder will need to demonstrate that they have previous experience in working with observational and (preferably) model datasets to examine regional dynamics, with experience in the Southern Ocean strongly preferred. The postholder will describe and quantify the dynamics driving the large-scale formation, circulation and export pathways of dense water within the Weddell Gyre and into the global ocean. This will be achieved by combining together, for the first time, existing observational datasets that are obtained and curated by BAS and SO-CHIC collaborators, into a gyre-scale synthesis and intercomparison with models. The synthesis of these presently disparate datasets will provide the basis to: (i) build and test a gyre scale dynamical framework and (ii) validate and tune a global model developed by partners LOCEAN. They will additionally contrast these results with several high resolution sector models of the Weddell sector (including those developed by ORCHESTRA), identifying those that most closely replicate observed dynamics. The gyre scale dynamical framework will be further developed alongside SO-CHIC collaborators to understand the impact of the Weddell polynya on regional circulation.

Qualification

PhD in ocean/climate dynamics or equivalent experience.

Duties

1) Implement adjoint ocean models of the Southern Ocean on the UK’s supercomputer ARCHER.

2) Use synthesis data to examine Weddell Gyre dynamics and interpret model output in the region.

3) Attend SO-CHIC/ORCHESTRA project meetings and engage with associated project partners to deliver the project objectives.

4) Lead high-quality publications resulting from the project.
