The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Head of UK Facilities to provide leadership, strategic vision and management of our UK buildings and services.

We are looking for a strategic and innovative thinker, a first class communicator with excellent team leadership qualities and a positive approach to change management.

The Head of UK Facilities is responsible for the effective delivery of facilities and services at BAS for all building users including staff, visitors, clients and tenants. The post-holder is responsible for ensuring that the physical environment is fit for purpose.

You will be responsible for managing annual resource budgets and capital projects.

The BAS Cambridge site is a mixed use facility including but not limited to,

- Catered office accommodation for up to 500 staff.
- Extensive laboratories of varied disciplines.
- Large packing and logistics facility.
- Multiple, mixed discipline, engineering workshops.

To be successful in this post, you will need to demonstrate your facilities management experience and how your skills will effectively be applied to our complex site in Cambridge.

This is an exciting position for someone with relevant FM / project management experience to lead and manage a lively and enthusiastic team.


To provide leadership, strategic vision and management of BAS UK Facilities in order to support the delivery of world-class science.

The core responsibilities of the UK/Cambridge Estates team are split into 3 teams,

- Laboratory Management (including remote facilities).
- Soft & Hard Facilities Management
- Projects and Capital investment.

Working with your management team, the post holder will be expected to drive continuous improvement and ensure all aspects of our Cambridge facilities are fit for purpose, now and into the future.

BAS is currently undertaking a series of strategic investments across its site in Cambridge. The Head of UK Facilities will be a key stakeholder in delivering these critical infrastructure projects.


FM / Construction / Engineering Professional qualification or equivalent experience


  • Lead the Cambridge Estates Team in order to deliver BAS strategic and operational objectives.
  • Responsible for delivering safe, environmentally sound and sustainable infrastructure at BAS Cambridge.
  • Ensure the Cambridge Site is at the forefront of all relevant regulatory and sector developments.
  • Maximise the safe use of appropriate emerging technologies to ensure our future challenges are met with coherent, innovative solutions.
  • Fulfil all associated managerial functions
    • Manage the personal and professional development of your team and ensure effort is aligned to estates/organisational strategic objectives
    • Prepare annual budgets, monitoring and reporting as required .Ensure the Cambridge Estate operates within allocated resource and capital limits.
    • Prepare, review and maintain procedures/policies that ensure:
      • The safe operation of our Cambridge site.
      • Cost effective operational delivery
      • Compliance with all relevant regulations and best practice
      • Emergency procedures, incident response and resources are fit for purpose.
      • All required audits, inspections, reviews and actions are carried out in a timely manner.
    • To collate and prepare business cases for capital investment in our Cambridge Site.
    • Ensure capital projects are delivered on time within budget and are of an appropriate quality.
    • Ensure the Condition Survey and Long Term Maintenance Plan are updated on an annual basis.


  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and key stakeholders to formulate strategy and deliver effective operations.
  • To be a key enabler in developing new ways of working at BAS Cambridge. To unite your team and be a champion for positive change, continually seeking new ways to improve working practices. Initial priority areas:
    • Optimising our on-site sustainable energy production
    • Introduce and champion the use of Maximo.
    • Investigate and introduce new flexible ways of office working. Including open plan / shared desk options / desk booking systems.

Undertake other duties as directed by the Head of Estates and BAS Director consistent with the key roles & responsibilities of the post.
