Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Capital Works Manager to provide leadership and management of its Estates capital programme in Cambridge.

The BAS Cambridge site is a mixed use facility including but not limited to,

-Catered office accommodation for up to 500 staff.
-45 laboratories with varied disciplines.
-Large packing and logistics facility.
-10+ mixed discipline engineering workshops.

Examples of some of our ongoing projects to completed within 2021/2022 -

- £2million - Roof Replacement & Solar PV system installation.
- £2million - BAS Cambridge ‘Off Gas’ project – Removing natural gas heating from site.
- Polar Aquarium Overhaul - £800k
- Polar Sediment Core Laboratory Installation - £100,000
- Laboratory and critical systems chilled Water replacement - £300,000
- New Ice core Storage facility - £110,000

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are vital to communicate fluently and persuasively to a range of staff and stakeholders. Flexibility is a must to respond to changes and encourage others to engage with change processes.

This is an exciting position for someone with relevant experience and enthusiasm.

Purpose

Management, oversight and delivery of the Estates UK capital programme.

Duties

• Responsible for the delivery of Estates projects on site at BAS Cambridge in support of long term maintenance, sustainability, operations and science delivery strategies.
• Ensure a robust governance structure is in place and PRINCE2 methodology is applied throughout delivery of all projects
• Oversee the preparation and upkeep of required project documentation and records
• Ensure that project outputs and products are delivered on time and are of agreed quality
• Take part in planning sessions as a senior member of the Cambridge Estates team.
• Financial planning, management and reporting for all Estates capital works at the Cambridge site.
• Safe delivery of Cambridge site construction activities
• Line management of project managers/project support staff
• Production of reports and briefing notes
• Present to a broad range of senior stakeholders
• Implementation of BAS Health and Safety and Environmental Policy
• Play a key role in development of long term maintenance and sustainability strategies
• Liaise with NERC stakeholders to develop funding bids and business cases
• Oversee tender/procurement activities for capital works projects
• Workforce planning in support of future projects

Qualifications

  • Membership/Registration with relevant professional body - Desirable [1]
  • Relevant degree, HND/HNC or equivalent - Desirable [2]

Resource Management ability

  • Budget management experience - Essential
  • Evidenced experience in developing budget costing and building business cases. - Essential

Skills / Experience

  • Proven track record managing project/programme delivery using the NEC suite of contracts. - Essential
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with diverse range of internal and external stakeholders - Essential
  • Experience in building services engineering, facilities management and/or construction - Essential
  • Working knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 - Essential
  • Professional Project Manager qualification. - Essential
  • Accredited NEC Project Manager - Desirable [2]
  • Implementation of risk assessments and method statements in support of construction activity - Desirable [2]
  • Working knowledge of relevant statutory legislation, standards and guidelines such as COSHH, DSEAR, Pressure Systems, Refrigerant Controls, BREEAM, CIBSE Guides etc - Desirable [3]
  • Understanding/experience of BIM - Desirable [3]
  • Delivery of project using PRINCE2 methodology - Desirable [2]
  • Ability to present to a broad audience - Desirable [3]
