The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) are looking for an Antarctic Atmospheric Scientist to join the Atmosphere, Ice and Climate Team. This new position will be based in Cambridge but with regular duty in the polar regions, principally at Halley VI Research Station.
The time based at Halley will focus on the Atmospheric Science programme for the station, including Meteorology and all aspects of the Atmospheric Chemistry programme. The proportion of time in Cambridge will involve work with both the Meteorology (MOM) and Tropospheric Chemistry (TROPCHEM) teams to analyse/interpret data, contribute to/lead publications, and prepare instrumentation for the following summer season.
We are looking for someone with a degree in a relevant field, or appropriate experience and experience operation atmospheric chemistry instruments. This role will involve regular periods of time in the polar regions so the successful candidate will need to be comfortable with remote working and also have excellent team working skills for living and working in this unique environment.
The main responsibility of the job is to carry out the Atmospheric Science programme for the Station. This includes the Meteorology programme and the all aspects of the Atmospheric Chemistry programme. While in Cambridge the applicant would work with both the Meteorology (MOM) and Tropospheric Chemistry (TROPCHEM) teams to analyse/interpret data, contribute to/lead publications, and prepare instrumentation for the following summer season.
Degree in physics, chemistry, meteorology, environmental science, or similar, appropriate experience.
a) To carry out the meteorological observations and scientific duties described in the Met Station Instructions (MSI) as agreed by the head of Meteorology and Ozone Monitoring (MOM).
b) To carry out a range of atmospheric chemistry measurements/experiments as part of the Tropospheric Chemistry (TROPCHEM) science programme.
c) To work unsupervised at Halley, carrying out both the meteorology and atmospheric chemistry measurements, but in liaison with staff in Cambridge.
d) To organise and carry out the work in a safe and professional way.
e) To report major problems to the head of MOM or TROPCHEM when they arise.
f) To maintain or repair faulty instrumentation when possible/appropriate.
g) To compile monthly and annual reports of the work undertaken.
h) To work with other staff to ensure that the operational and safety standards of the base are maintained.
i) To become a member of the Halley response team and participate in training to include but not limited to: Advanced 1st aid, Search and rescue, Aircraft fire fighting, Breathing apparatus and Major incident response.
j) To undertake general duties as required by the Director.
a) Work up and interpret data, in particular arising from the summer projects, and contribute to/lead scientific publications and other forms of output.
b) Prepare and develop further instrumentation including for summertime science projects.
