SUMMARY:New exhibition explores the intersection of art and Antarctic science
DESCRIPTION:From Friday 12 September 2025\, step into a world where Antarctic science and art meet at the Scott Polar Research Institute’s new art exhibition – Through Ice & Fire. This is a striking collaboration between contemporary artist Rowan Huntley and polar geologist Dr Joanne Johnson from the British Antarctic Survey. \nThis unique event is free to attend and will be open every Tuesday to Saturday\, 10.00am to 4.00pm until 27 June. The exhibition blends offers visitors a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on the icy continent and how it is being affected by the climate crisis. \nA piece of artwork produced by Rowan Huntley\, featured in the exhibition | credit: Rowan Huntley \nFor more information head to the exhibition webpage. \nHow to find the exhibition

SUMMARY:British Antarctic Survey at Duxford Summer Air Show
DESCRIPTION:Join the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) at this year’s Duxford Air Show and get an up-close encounter with one of our Twin Otter aircraft\, essential for our pioneering scientific endeavours in Antarctica and beyond! \n  \nDuxford Air Show is one of the premier air shows taking place in the UK this year. A lively and family-friendly affair\, you’ll be treated to fast jets\, warbirds\, aerobatic aircraft\, funfair\, live music and more! \n  \nCome and meet our distinctive Twin Otter aircraft\, ‘Ice Cold Katy’ on static display over the weekend. Chat to our crew involved in airborne scientific projects and seize the opportunity to learn about the challenges of flying\, working and living in some of the harshest environments on the planet. \n  \n  \nTwin Otter Aircraft \n  \nBAS operates four Twin Otters\, which form the backbone of our operations. In a typical season\, they log approximately 1300 hours of flight time in Antarctica\, supporting multiple scientific field projects. Two of our Twin Otters are specially modified to carry a wide range of sensors and instruments allowing them to do atmospheric and geophysical science\, as well as airborne remote sensing. They also transport scientists to their field sites\, resupply them\, or relocate them during the season\, and then safely return the team to Antarctic research stations upon completion of their projects. \n  \nDo come along to find out more! \n  \nThe Duxford Summer Air Show takes place on 4 and 5 July 2026 at IWM Duxford\, Duxford\, Cambridgeshire\, CB22 4QR \nTo book your tickets\, visit the IWM Duxford Summer Air Show website.

SUMMARY:Polar Perspectives - Exploring Antarctic Science: Royal Society of Biology webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join British Antarctic Survey (BAS) researchers at a special webinar to mark Biology Week hosted by the Royal Society of Biology.  Our scientists will explore ocean biodiversity and its weird and wonderful adaptations to extreme conditions\, and what Antarctica can tell us about our planet’s past\, present\, and future. \nDiscover how life exists at extreme temperatures\, what cells can reveal about survival in the cold\, and how new\, cutting-edge technology is being developed to operate at sub-zero temperatures\, helping us to understand life at the molecular level. \nBAS research spans biology\, chemistry\, physics and engineering\, bringing expertise from across disciplines to drive new discoveries and support efforts to tackling climate change for a more sustainable future. \nHear from BAS speakers: \nProfessor Dame Jane Francis FRS\, Director\nMatt Bell\, Marine Biologist\nProfessor Melody Clark\, Project Leader\nProfessor Lloyd Peck FRS FRi FRSB\, Team Leader \nThey will discuss their unique careers and the importance of the vital research they carry out. This will be followed by the opportunity to ask questions during a panel Q&A. \n  \n \n\nThis event is open to all and free to attend. Advance booking is essential via the Royal Society of Biology website.\n\nBooking will close on Thursday 15 October at 23:59.\n\n\nFor event queries\, please contact Beth Glynn-Ramsden at events@rsb.org.uk or on 020 3925 3440.

SUMMARY:British Antarctic Survey at Ice Station RGS
DESCRIPTION:The British Antarctic Survey invites you to join us at the Royal Geographical Society’s (RGS) Ice Station event this December! \nIce Station RGS is an immersive evening event bringing together art\, geography\, science\, music\, film\, literature and exploration to look at ice from every angle and discover what it can tell us about our changing planet. \nAfter being welcomed to the event in the historic Ondaatje Theatre\, explore the Society after dark and experience a series of encounters\, performances and icy installations! \nVisit the Summit Room\, where you’ll meet our scientists and discover more about life and research in some of the most remote environments on Earth. Step inside our cosy polar tent\, try on authentic polar gear\, and discover what’s on the menu for scientists working in the field. \nIn the Map Room\, where a million maps lie beneath your feet – listen to live music and contemplate the journeys\, landscapes and stories held within its walls. \n  \nCamping in Antarctica \nWander into the Polar Hall\, where you can enjoy expertly curated ice themed cocktails. Discover extraordinary images from our Platinum Print Collection\, before stepping into the Foyle Reading Room to uncover the story of the Discovery expedition\, 125 years after its remarkable journey into the Antarctic. \nIn the Pavilion Gallery\, discover our unique exhibition about ice\, ranging from the legendary Antarctic photographs of Frank Hurley to knitted portraits of glaciers. \nAlong the way\, watch films\, hear spoken word and encounter ideas that explore our relationship with ice\, culturally\, scientifically and creatively. Throughout the building\, artists respond to ice in their own ways\, inviting you to pause\, look closer and see this familiar yet extraordinary substance differently. \n  \nFor ticket information please visit the Royal Geographical Society’s website.
