Antarctic place names

The UK Antarctic Place-names Committee (APC) considers proposals and makes recommendations for place names within the British Antarctic Territory (BAT), the sector of the Antarctic south of latitude 60 degrees South, between longitude 20 degrees West and 80 degrees West. The APC also considers and recommends names for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI).

The BAT and SGSSI gazetteers are the official lists of place names approved for British use.

The APC website has:

  • Web-maps showing the location and further details for all approved names in both BAT and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
  • Information on how to propose a new name and a downloadable proposal form.
  • Further information on the work of the Committee and its members.
  • Downloads for the BAT and SGSSI gazetteers.

SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) gazetteer is a compilation of place names submitted by international naming authorities across the continent and includes all official names for BAT.
